Originally built to increase mobility to the Upper West Side residents, this tunnel was poorly executed and abandoned soon after it was built. It soon provided shelter for the homeless, and a kind of ragtag community grew within it.
Graffiti artist Chris "Freedom" Pape first came to the tunnel in 1974 and added his work to the wall, marking the start of the tunnel as a makeshift gallery. Periodically, city authorities paint over the artwork, though all that really does is provide the artists with a fresh canvas...
